Let me start off by saying that I love to follow trends but I rarely buy pieces that are “in style” I am the weirdo who will buy it when the craze is over. These are trends that I adored, bought and hope they never go into the “thats so last year” category.
Love .Peplum accentuates the hips and gives us just the right amount of curves. This trend however, doesn’t really do well with women who have no hips whatsoever and women who have too much hip so its a very tricky trend, definitely not for everyone
Floral is my latest obsession, after I saw Roberto Cavalli suits gracing the red carpets I was in completely in love.I love uniformed outfits which Is why I love monochrome so much,so the fact that floral suits were back in made me so happy!
(Solange in Roberto Cavalli floral Blazer)
The Hottest color to trend.Period.Oxblood goes so well with turquoise, mustard, dark green, hot pink and cream.Try it!
Thanks to Isabel Marant, this has been my favorite trend.I love the fact that if you didnt like sneakers because you were way too girly you could buy a pair and you would feel just as fab.I love sneakers,I know I am always in heel but my alter ego adores Jordans. its true.
The sexiest fall trend.I am so weak for black velvet and leather.Fashion can be so breathtaking!
Leather Isn’t on this list because its a 2012 trend.I am not crazy,I know leather is a luxury that will never ever be out of style however this year was a craze Ive never seen. The oxblood, blue and even pink leather really hit the carpet and the street this year.It was beautiful..and expensive.
Agree or Disagree? What were your favorite 2012 trends?

Putting my obsession with Nicki to the side,I love this ad.It screams spring, its full of life and its amazingly sexy.I was a bit worried about how feminine it would’ve made Ricky Martin look but they did a great job in having the lipstick as a prop doing what a manly man does, lift weights! Very smart!
Where are you from originally?
My family is originally from the South, but I was born and raised in New York City, Queens to be more precise and I am very proud of my roots.
At what point in your life did you know that fashion was for you?
I have always had a love for fashion, art, and design. I got a lot of my drive from my grandmother, who was the main person in my family, who actually got me sewing and she helped me develop and fine tone my craft at the ripe age of 13.
How do your feel to be so young and having the attention of so many, your work is at the tip of everyone’s tongue are you surprised?
I am surprised that so many have taken an interest in my work. The fact that such fashion industry giants such as Andre Leon Talley, Diane von Furstenberg, Tyra Banks and more have taken the time to embrace me is truly a gift. I have spent so much time dreaming of these moments and in only a few months I have been swept into this world of elegance, grace, and beauty. This is definitely an honor and I feel grateful everyday to call them mentors and friends.
Your designs are like no other, they are truly unique where does your inspiration come from?
My inspiration comes from multiple sources; friends, family, art, street style, vast cultures from Paris to New York and then to Johannesburg. I feel inspired by LIFE; the opportunity to live after my bout with cancer, my desire to succeed, my determination to create fashion and design. The gift of Life is the ultimate inspiration.
What is your advice to young bloggers, designers, stylists and models entering the fashion industry, is there anything they must learn before stepping into this “new world”?
My advice for people wanting to come into the fashion industry would have to be three (3) things.
Always create the best possible product, quality is key.
Go out and keep going out to meet people in the industry, networking is mandatory.
Create a great support team, people you can trust and always have your best interests.
Is there a particular piece that you have designed and executed that is your so called “baby” that you love dearly, your favorite piece?
I do not have a favorite piece because I believe my clothes are all my children and to favor any one would only cause conflicts. I have a few moments that I enjoyed my pieces being a part of such as Cassie wearing the Sea Urchin Dress to the Met Gala After Party and Rihanna wearing the 3D Catsuit in the Rude Boy video.
If someone not in the industry sees one of your designs and are ready to buy how do they go about doing that?
Well, I have my website that has a contact section, just fill it out and one of the PR or Management Team Members will contact you immediately to assist. I can easily have some leggings or some simple classic dresses ready for you.
If you want a custom piece, we will have to schedule a fitting. (www.LaQuanSmith.com)
Name one trend you absolutely dread and one you absolutely love.
I don’t really “dread” any trends accept there are a few that seriously hurt my eyes. Examples would have to be the Crocs and UGG Boots. These two things can make any outfit appear unflattering even with the best accessories.
As for trends I do love, you can probably see… I absolutely love leggings. They are such a statement piece. I hope they don’t fade into oblivion.
Is there anything else that grabs your attention, maybe a talent that you have that’s not related to fashion, maybe singing or dancing?
I like to think I am a good singer. I hope that I am because I sing-a-long to a ton of songs when people are around and I hope I am not embarrassing myself. haha. I definitely enjoy art… it is closely related to fashion when it comes to sketching but, I feel like art especially watercolors or oil paintings can be quite freeing because there is no silhouette to follow its all about being free and letting out your inhibitions on a canvas.
Birthday present anyone?
